Many proteins are like tiny machines, having a specialised job in the organism, such as identifying and neutralising disease-causing bacteria and viruses. However, within the circle of life, there is a battle between the pathogens (bugs/bacteria that cause disease) and the human that they infect. As we develop ways to combat infection, the pathogens evolve ways to circumvent this: And so this arms race continues.

Proteins can be extraordinarily beautiful and the proteins in the PDB connected with health and disease have inspired school students to create the artworks in our 2018 calendar. The calendar has the theme "Tiny machines in the arms race of Nature".
